Prices of the .BERLIN Disclosed

The association supporting the .BERLIN project, dotBERLIN GmbH & Co. KG reveals on its website that registering a domain name under this TLD(Top Level Domain) should not cost you more than 30 € per year. An interesting price considering the relatively unrestrictive registration rules.

Get a Dot BERLIN for 30 €

The dot Berlin is among the avant-garde of new TLDS. Founded in 2005 dotBERLIN GmbH & Co. KG started to work on this new TLD project well before the liberalization of TLDs was announced by the ICANN in June 2008.
Ahead of the other cityTLDs, the registry has already disclosed the selling cost of .BERLIN when bought from local German registrars. Amounting to around 30 € this price was computed with regards to the various costs charged by the different intermediaries (ICANN, Corenic, registry and « registrars », cf http://wiki.dotberlin.de/index.php/Follow_the_Money and screen capture below).

dotBERLIN GmbH & Co. KG also states that the total cost of the .BERLIN project (ICANN application and accreditation fees) should be between one and three million euros.

Guess what a Berliner is?

As for the registration rules all people and companies belonging to the «Berliner community» should be entitled to register a domain name under the .BERLIN extension. The «Berlin community» as defined by the cityTLD Principles followed by dotBERLIN GmbH & Co. KG designates all individuals and entities which identify with the city of Berlin. This includes:
– «inhabitants of locations with the name Berlin worldwide,
– people which are born in locations with the name Berlin,
– people which work, live nearby, or feel themselves associated to a location with the name Berlin,
– people with private, social, cultural, or other relations to locations with the name Berlin, e.g. relatives,
– organisations with cultural, economic, or other relations to a location with the name Berlin,
– people with the name or surname Berlin».

In other words, everyone will get the chance to register his or her own .BERLIN domain name!

Domain Name Theft

Given its wide appeal since 2005 the .BERLIN was victim of its success. Indeed it was robbed off some of its natural domain names. Hence the registred association dotBERLIN GmbH & Co. KG initially wanted to advertise its .BERLIN project under the domain name punktberlin.de (meaning dotberlin.de in German). Unfortunately the domain name had already been registered. The association had then to come to terms with the idea of using an English word and ended up registering dotberlin.de. It is not that authentic, but nonetheless efficient in terms of marketing!
